Five questions to ask before you choose a publisher
You do not have to know every industry term to ask for clear answers.
What am I paying for?
Ask for a written scope: editing level, design, formats, print arrangements, distribution setup and any marketing work. Ask which costs are separate.
What decisions stay with me?
Talk through approvals, revisions and how your voice will be protected. Read the agreement carefully before you commit.
What happens to my rights and files?
Ask how rights, royalties, final files and any future changes are handled in your specific agreement. These details should be clear in writing.
Who will keep me informed?
Find out who your point of contact is, how milestones are tracked and what happens if either side needs more time.
What does success mean for this book?
A family memoir, a first novel and a business book can have very different goals. Start with yours before discussing a route.
